We met in Anugrah for about two hours: extempore speeches with stressors inbuilt. Some one who wanted to talk on "Uses of cow" was manoeuvred into talking about "India's Atomic program"! Another youngman was tricked into talking about pros/cons of sex education in school. S surprised everyone with his sudden unexpected fluency. He himself was openly surprised. A good audience can do amazing things to speakers. Also, we have finally created an atmospher where 'stammering is fine'. Then, we played a game involving asking questions. Many CWS find it difficult because all questions in Hindi start with a K sound.

K said a very significant thing suddenly: Till I saw those videos yesterday, I thought I alone stutter in the world..
But then, he had clear cut ideas as to what was wrong and what should be done. For example,he wants to just learn the "technique" and go away. His present academic downturn is because of certain teachers- he is clear about that. So, just to creat enough doubt, I asked him, what did he think was the cause of his stammering? Again, he was sure that it was because of lack of self confidence. But how much confidence or preparation do you need to answer your roll call in class? Could there be other reasons? Finally, he was open to other possibilities. I discussed "Neuro-physiological" model.
Many stammerers go for a reverse blaim game early in life. They hold themselves guilty for their stammering- instead of accepting it as a disease process beyond their control. This creates further emotional problems on top of the primary issues.
K has been taught bouncing and was given certain phone numbers of other PWS to practice bouncing with. Will he return? Difficult to say.

Tarun, a medical doctor from AIIMS and I had a good discussion about stammering,
family reactions, role of self-help and society for about twenty minutes.. It is
available for download in two parts, each about 10 minutes :
Part 1 (28.3 mb)
Part 2 (37.9 mb)
When I was a child, I had not seen anyone stammering so I thought I am the only
stammerer in this beeeeeeg world! We need to change all this by writing about
it, talking about it, putting up video clips etc. Whatever. Hope you all enjoy
I am also working on English subtitles so that Non-Hindi speakers can also
benefit by these interviews.
BTW- if you want to see bouncing, prolongation and voluntary stuttering IN ACTION, see these videos.

Tarun had come from Delhi. So, four of us, all PWS, marched to the local central school. Many CWS have a dream: some day I will grow up and have the courage to face the crowd and tell them how I feel when I am mocked: We did the same thing- but of course not so dramatically. We did it in a very balanced and humane way: what children could do to help their colleagues who may have stammering or other issues, differences. The central idea was to sensitise the children and help any CWS to come forth and enroll for group therapy. The principal, Dr Gupta was very encouarging. Children too were quite open and nice.
We all had a great time talking ex-tempore on an issue which is so close to our heart. BTW, Tarun has done his MBBS from AIIMS and is planning to do his residency from USA- already has cleared one entrance test. All the best to Tarun!

JP has already covered this meeting (4th October 2009). Let me just add a few 'behind the scene' details. Barring two, rest of us were stutterers. Some of us had reached a plateau- in other words we had practiced enough of speech techniques in normal situations: now was the time to challenge ourselves a little bit more and help us to move towards spontaneous speech, as opposed to one to one rehearsed communication. Drama can be a fun and all round activity for people like us. Anugrah Interevntion center (Herbertpur Christian Hospital) had very kindly lent us a hall for the purpose.
We had photocopied a play from a collection meant for school chldren; shared it before hand with participants; gave them some more time to prepare- and then did many reherasals for various scenes. We also changed the roles to ensure fun and learning.
While coming back to Samagra, we also stopped at a tailor's shop to practice our speech techniques and during conversation we found that he is Tibetan dress specialist, which I would love to have before I leave...On our way, we stopped a few more people to practice :)
After an energizer "nani pani", we concluded with a painting activity and then describing our paintings. Parmanand and me too tried our hand at painting..Kids wanted us to come everyday..
In the evening me and Sachin had a voice chat with Pune SHG and we are planning to have more of such conversations as it was as good as face to face conversation.

Anyway, Joomla, an open source software, brings in big changes the way business is and can be conducted. For example, it lets you have a front end, through which lay users can contribute to a website without learning programming and without wrecking it! This is what JP is doing for Samagra website. Samagra is updating all the relevant information- like our new office in Dehradun, staff and volunteer updates etc. Oh, of course, we have to make sure that the offline looks and functionality is maintained even when it goes online. And for that you have to know your stuff- Xampp, Apache, ASP, backend, no-end etc. And who else could do it better than a programmer from Infosys? But of course test of pudding is in tasting!
